2008 FEIS Games - Kapiti Coast

The Gaelic games tournament was played on Sunday October 26.

There were three teams in both the men's and ladies' football while two teams contested the hurling. Auckland sent down two men's Gaelic football team while Wellington entered one team.. In the women's football it was the reverse with two Wellington teams and one Auckland side.

The games were played at Kapiti College in gusty sometimes almost gale force wind and intermittent sun and showery rain which held off till the very end.

All football games were 7-a-side with the hurling 6-a-side. Round robin and elimination games were played in 7 minute halves with the respective finals - hurling, men's & women's football being 10minute halves.

Munster Shield - Open Hurling

The Wellington and Auckland hurlers squared off in a 6-aside game for the Munster Shield and in a close hard fought match Auckland came out narrow winners by 1 doal. This is the first time there has been a hurling game at feis other than demonstration games and "puck arounds" for many years so it was an encouraging start to a hoped for resurgence of the game here.

D4 Trophy - Women's Open Football

After the morning's round robin play Wellington Gaels and Auckland emerged the contenders for the women's final with Wellington Gaels proving too strong, winning by a 3 point margin to take the D4 Tavern trophy.

Ward Cup Men's Open Football

The men's final came down to a duel between Auckland Gaels and Wellington Gaels with a thrilling end to end contest which saw Wellington with a narrow half time lead of a couple of points, after playing with the strong wind behind them. This was considered nowhere near enough to defend in the strong conditions but surprisingly Wellington came out strongly in the second half to keep the game close and snatch the equaliser in a hectic final few minutes after Auckland had played catch up to build what looked to be a winning two-point lead.

With both teams locked in a draw the game went to extra time just as a storm descended on the grounds just after the final whistle sounded and in two halves of extra time in appalling storm conditions neither team could be separated at the end as the hectic finish of ordinary time was repeated. The playing conditions got worse and worse as the wind increased strength and the rain came down harder ruling out any decision to play more extra time or a shootout.

The feis committee ruled that the ward be shared with each team to hold it for 6 months and the teams to decide between themselves who should have first tenure.
Honours were evenly shared between the two centres with a win apiece and a drawn game. A fitting result to a great days Gaelic sport.
